Yes, certain forms of breathwork increase HRV, especially slow, paced breathing near five or six breaths per minute. The change can happen during a single session. Regular practice may also support autonomic regulation, although one higher reading does not automatically mean your health or fitness has improved.
HRV has become a popular number to watch. Rings, watches, chest straps, and apps now give people a daily score before they have even left bed.
That can be useful. It can also create a strange kind of anxiety. You wake up, see that your HRV dropped, and immediately assume something is wrong.
I would not use it that way.
Heart rate variability can tell you something about stress and recovery, but it cannot tell you everything. Breathwork can influence the number, sometimes quite dramatically, yet the context of that change matters as much as the number itself.
What Is Heart Rate Variability?
Heart rate variability measures the small differences in time between one heartbeat and the next.
A heart beating 60 times per minute does not normally beat exactly once every second. One interval may be slightly longer, while the next is shorter. That variation changes as your body responds to breathing, movement, emotion, posture, sleep, and many other demands.
HRV is often used as a window into autonomic regulation, particularly the influence of the parasympathetic nervous system on the heart. It is not, however, a direct reading of your entire nervous system. Researchers continue to warn that HRV is sensitive to recording length, breathing pattern, posture, signal quality, software, and the metric being used.
I think of HRV as a clue rather than a verdict.
Why HRV Matters for Health and Performance
A flexible body needs to adjust.
Your heart should respond when you stand up, begin exercising, face pressure, eat, rest, or fall asleep. HRV reflects part of that ongoing adjustment.
Athletes often follow HRV trends to get a better sense of recovery and training readiness. Other people use it to notice how sleep, illness, alcohol, workload, or emotional stress may be affecting them.
What matters most is your own pattern over time. Comparing your number with someone else’s is rarely useful. Even comparing two readings from the same person can be misleading when one was taken lying down after sleep and the other was recorded after coffee, movement, or controlled breathing.
A low reading on one morning does not mean your nervous system is broken. A high reading during a breathing exercise does not prove that you have permanently improved it.
How Breathwork Influences Heart Rate Variability
Your heart rate naturally changes as you breathe. It tends to rise during inhalation and fall during exhalation. This pattern is called respiratory sinus arrhythmia.
When you slow the breath, those changes can become larger and more organized. Breathing near an individual’s resonance frequency also engages the baroreflex, one of the systems involved in short-term blood pressure regulation. The result can be a noticeable increase in HRV while the practice is happening.
This is one reason I teach breathing as more than a relaxation trick.
The breath is giving the cardiovascular and nervous systems a rhythm to work with. You do not have to force that rhythm. In fact, oversized breathing can make the exercise uncomfortable and distract you from what your body is doing.

What Does the Research Say About Breathwork and HRV?
The evidence for slow breathing is fairly consistent.
A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis found that voluntary slow breathing increased vagally mediated HRV during breathing sessions and after the sessions had ended. The authors reviewed both immediate effects and changes following repeated training.
An earlier review reached a similar conclusion. Across the studies it examined, slow breathing was associated with increased HRV and respiratory sinus arrhythmia, along with changes in emotional state and brain activity. The breathing methods varied, so we should be careful about treating every slow-breathing practice as identical.
There is an important wrinkle here.
Slow breathing can raise HRV immediately because respiration itself creates larger oscillations in heart rate. That is a real physiological response, but it is not the same as showing that your normal resting HRV has improved for the rest of the day.
Repeated practice may lead to longer-term changes in regulation and baroreflex function, but those changes need to be measured under consistent resting conditions.
So, yes, breathing can increase the number. The meaning of the increase depends on when and how you measured it.
Which Breathing Techniques Are Most Effective for Increasing HRV?
The strongest immediate effects are usually seen with slow-paced breathing near resonance frequency.
For many adults, that rate falls somewhere between 4.5 and 6.5 breaths per minute. The exact rate varies, which is why formal HRV biofeedback sometimes tests several breathing speeds instead of assuming that six breaths per minute is perfect for everyone.
You can still begin without laboratory equipment.
Try this:
Sit comfortably and let your shoulders relax.
Breathe in through your nose for five seconds.
Breathe out gently for five seconds.
Continue for five minutes.
Make the breath smaller if you feel strained or air hungry.
That gives you six breaths per minute.
You do not need to fill your lungs completely. The breathing should remain quiet enough that you could continue without taking a recovery breath.
Research in athletes has found that slow-paced breathing between five and seven breaths per minute increases cardiac vagal activity compared with normal breathing.
HRV biofeedback takes this further by showing your heart rhythm while you breathe and helping you find the pace that creates the strongest, smoothest response. It can be useful, but it is not required for learning the basic relationship between breath and heart rhythm.
Can You Measure HRV Improvements at Home?
A wearable can help you follow a trend, provided you use it consistently.
Try to measure under similar conditions:
at roughly the same time
in the same body position
before caffeine, exercise, or breathwork
using the same device and recording method
Do not compare an HRV reading taken during slow breathing with your ordinary morning baseline. The breathing exercise is designed to create larger heart-rate oscillations, so the numbers are answering different questions.
Consumer devices also vary in accuracy, particularly when movement or poor signal quality enters the recording. Some perform well at rest, but wearable HRV is still sensitive to motion, skin contact, algorithms, and the metric displayed.
Use the trend to become more curious about your habits. Do not let the score become another source of stress.
How to Use Breathwork to Support Long-Term HRV
I would start with five minutes a day.
Use the same gentle pattern for two weeks before deciding whether it works for
you. Practice when you are relatively settled, not only when the day has already gone badly.
You may see HRV rise during the exercise. That is expected. The longer-term question is whether your resting trend changes when sleep, training, illness, and other major influences remain reasonably stable.
I would also pay attention to changes that no device can summarize neatly. Are you recovering faster after a stressful conversation? Is it easier to settle at night? Can you notice tension before it takes over?
Those are signs that the practice is becoming part of your life rather than remaining a five-minute performance.

Still, the number is not the goal.
The goal is to build a body that can respond when life asks for effort and settle when the effort is over. Breathwork can support that flexibility, but only when you practice it as a skill rather than chase a better score.
